Chaffee Zoo gets special delivery -- a baby giraffe

Posted at 03:14 PM on Tuesday, May. 11, 2010

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo has a new addition -- a baby female giraffe.

The baby was born at 10:46 a.m. The youngster needed about 2 1/2 hours to stand up with some assistance and appears to be in good health, said Scott Barton, the zoo's director.

The baby giraffe also was seen nursing from her mother, Uzuri, which also is a positive sign, Barton said.

Zookeepers have been expecting the baby giraffe for a couple months. Giraffes typically have a gestation period of about 14 months.

The baby giraffe has not yet been named.

Son3 is going on a field trip on Thursday to the zoo with his class and may get to see the new baby giraffe...

Happy Journaling....
